The Method Behind the Magic

This whitepaper presents the rationale behind the leveling and organization of the Ooka Adventure, which takes the student from the most basic building blocks of reading (both phonetic and linguistic) through a carefully leveled series of activities in order to develop reading fluency.

The Ooka Island online early literacy program is built upon a hierarchy of phonetic and linguistic activities designed to create effortless, or fluent, reading.   While each Ooka adventurer follows an individualized path to fluency based on his/her specific progress and areas of weakness, the program, at its macro level, is built upon a framework of instructional activities that are presented in an organized sequence created to maximize the development of reading fluency.

Integrating the Common Core Standards into Interactive, Online Early Literacy Programs

This whitepaper outlines how games and activities in the Ooka Adventure are aligned with the Common Core Standards Initiative (CCSI). The CCSI is a common core of state standards in English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12 developed by Governors and state commissioners of education.

It is well known that various forms of entertainment – storytelling, interactivity, singing, etc. can serve to keep children engaged while learning. A program that can effectively incorporate a spectrum of entertainment methods can keep children interested and engaged through a challenging educational process. If that same program also aligns with a set of recognized standards, then we believe that we have a solution to an educational problem. Here is how the Ooka Island Adventure will keep children engaged in a standardized reading program.
