The Ooka Island Adventure Explained
How does my child change the appearance of their avatar?
When a player first begins playing Ooka Island, they get to customize their avatar in the avatar creator. In the avatar creator they have the ability to change the look and style of their avatar. There are lots of different options to choose from so that they can make their avatar as unique as themselves!
After they setup their avatar the first time, they can change the look of their avatar at anytime during Free Play. When players reach Free Play, they can access the avatar creator by clicking on the yellow wardrobe in the Pencil Playground.
My child is having trouble with the Cave of Sounds. How is this activity played?
Part A of the Cave of Sounds activity involves listening for a specific sound when presented with a group of single sounds (not syllables). Part B of this activity involves connecting the new sound to its printed form, and Part C requires the player to listen to a syllable and identify its first or last sound. (In each Part C session the player listens for initial sounds only, or final sounds only.)
Part A:
The first part of the Cave of Sounds is an ‘auditory only’ activity. As the player travels through the first cave, s/he stops at seven gates. At each gate s/he hears a series of sounds. When the target sound is heard, s/he clicks anywhere in the cave (s/he does not need to click on any particular object, just click anywhere within the cave). If the player clicks correctly, the gate opens and s/he travels along the tracks to the next gate. If s/he clicks incorrectly, Zobot repeats the sound and the player tries again.
Part B:
In the second part of the activity, the player must identify the printed form (letter or letters) of the sound that s/he listened for in Part A. Using a magnifying glass, s/he finds and clicks on the letter(s) representing that sound (five times).
Part C:
At level five of Cave of Sounds, a third part is added. In this section the player listens to a word or syllable and uses a magnifying glass to find its first or last sound and then clicks on the letter(s). The word or syllable is then displayed on the screen and the player says the word with Zobot.
What are the Ookariffic Popups?
When players successfully complete a level in an activity on Ooka Island, they receive a sticker reward and get one item unlocked in the Mist Mart. The unlocked item is displayed in the ‘Ookariffic Popup’ at the end of the activity. Players can then purchase the unlocked item from the Mist Mart during their free play session.
Why are unlocked, Ookariffic Popup items not in the Pencil Playground?
Certain items within the Mist Mart are ‘locked’ when the player begins the Ooka Island Adventure, and are unable to be purchased from the Mist Mart. These items are designated with a ‘lock’ icon in the bottom right hand corner of the item. As players successfully complete activities on Ooka Island these items are unlocked and are then able to be purchased in the Mist Mart. Unlocking items on Ooka Island does not make them available in the Pencil Playground but does makes them available for purchase in the Mist Mart. When you purchase an item from the Mist Mart it will appear in the Pencil Playground, clothing and costumes will appear in the Wardrobe inside the Pencil Playground.
How long should Free Play last?
Free Play lasts for eight minutes and when it finishes, the Ooka Island Adventure will bring the player back into Guided Play. When players are in the Pencil Playground or the Mist Mart, they will be moved immediately into Guided play. Players who are in one of the seven learning activities or in the Popcorn Library at the end of Free Play will finish the current activity or the book that they are reading, and will then be moved into Guided Play. If Free Play continues beyond eight minutes, the player should log out of the game and log back in to continue on the Guided Play path.
What is the learning flow of the Ooka Island Adventure?
The learning flow consists of 20 minutes of guided curricular play in a variety of fun phonemic and phonetic activities and then 10 minutes of reading a new e-book in the Popcorn Library. After this 30 minute period of learning, the child has accomplished a lot of hard work and as a result is rewarded with Free Play! During Free Play, the entire island opens up and children can navigate freely throughout the island to explore and discover new surprises. The Free Play feature is enabled after a child completes a full cycle of the learning flow (see PDF).
Check out our Day of Play blog post to learn more about the learning flow!
What do each of the activities on Ooka Island teach?
Each learning activity on Ooka Island focuses on a different skill that is essential for reading fluency and comprehension. You can learn more about the seven learning activities on Ooka Island and the skills they focus on here.
How does the Ooka Island Adventure differ from other reading programs?
The Ooka Island Adventure has many innovative features. Check out our innovative features guide for more information.
What is the Ooka Compass Assessment?
The Ooka Compass is an in-game assessment that can be taken by any child/student with an Ooka Island Adventure account. The assessment won’t bypass the activities to higher levels, as it’s very important that the sequence of phonemic and phonetic activities (e.g. Cave of Sounds) are followed through so the child is strong and secure in the sound system, but does provide a way for players to skip books in the Popcorn Library to the appropriate reading level. Based on their achievement in the assessment, a player will either start higher up the book path at the Beginning level or they will start at the beginning of the book path in the Emergent level.
Find out more about the Ooka Compass in our Innovative Features section.
You can turn on the Ooka Compass through the Ooka Lighthouse.
- Log into the Ooka Lighthouse using the same parent/instructor username and password you use to log into the game.
- Click on Players
- Click on a player name
- Put a check in the box next to ‘Enable Ooka Compass’
- Click ‘Save’
Please note:
- We only recommend the Ooka Compass for young learners who have been introduced to reading already and are at least 6 years old, as it assesses them on higher level content and has them read a Beginning level book.
- The Ooka Compass needs to be completed in one session. The Ooka Compass takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to complete.
- Once a player has taken the Ooka Compass, there is no benefit to having them complete the Ooka Compass again.

How do I log into the Ooka Island Adventure?
There are two parts to logging into the Ooka Island Adventure. The first login screen requires the parent/instructor to enter his/her credentials. Once the account information has been successfully entered the Ooka Island Adventure opens up the child login page. Children will not need to memorize a username or password as we use picture avatars for usernames and pictures for passwords. This allows children to easily remember their login credentials, while keeping accounts secure when a parent/instructor has access to multiple student/child accounts.
To begin the login process, double click on the Ooka Island Adventure game icon to start the game. After the opening credits and the Ooka Island video, you will be taken to the parent/instructor login page, where you can enter your parent/instructor login information. Upon successful entry of this information the game will open the student/child account login screen. Now that you have logged into the Ooka Island Adventure you can hand control over to the student/child for the selection of an avatar and the choice of a picture password. Once this is done the Ooka Island Adventure will log the child into the program and play can begin.

If you are seeing: “No child accounts present, click here to add child accounts” when you log into the Ooka Island Adventure then you need to login to the Ooka Lighthouse and setup an account for your children/student’s.
The Ooka Island Adventure has a two tier account structure. There is a login for the parent/instructor account which is created when you sign up for the Ooka Island Adventure. Assigned to each parent/instructor account are child/student accounts which are set up in the Ooka Lighthouse. Log into the Ooka Lighthouse now, to setup player accounts for your child/student.

If this happens, close the game, and change your computer’s screen resolution to be at least 1024 x 768. (The game will run at higher screen resolutions, but anything lower than 1024 x 768 will not be able to display the full game screen). Once the screen resolution has been changed, log back into the Ooka Island Adventure and you should be able to create your avatar!
When I click on the Ooka Island Adventure icon on my desktop, the program won’t open.
You may run into the issue of the Ooka Island Adventure not opening if you are a customer of Comcast. Recently, we have seen an issue where a program provided by Comcast, called Constant Guard, won’t allow the Ooka Island Adventure to open. To correct this issue, you can do one of two things:
- If you don’t use Constant Guard and have another anti-virus/firewall program installed on your computer, you can uninstall the program. Once it is uninstalled, the Ooka Island Adventure should open without any problems.
- If you would like to keep Constant Guard installed, you will need to update the settings in Constant Guard to indicate that the Ooka Island Adventure is a safe program and that it can be opened on your computer. For instructions on how to do this, please contact support at Comcast.
The game logged my child out abruptly.
If you notice that your child is logged out of the Ooka Island Adventure abruptly and the game is being played on a computer running a Windows operating system, the issue is most likely due to to an out-of-date graphics driver.
The Learning Support Representatives (LSR’s) at Ooka Island can help you update your graphics driver. Please contact our support team via chat, phone (1-877-307-3616), or email (support@ookaisland.com) to let them know that you are experiencing this issue, and they will help you update your graphics driver.
Safety
Is the Ooka Island Adventure safe for my child?
The Ooka Island Adventure is a fully contained world where children can immerse themselves safely. As a parent or educator you don’t have to worry about your child or student coming into contact with inappropriate language or content as the game is a private, secure world where players do not interact with other users they do not know. We have worked hard to make the Ooka Island Adventure a safe and secure place where your child can play.
The Ooka Island Adventure is accessed online but not through a web browser, so players are never directed outside of the game to other websites or to outside content.
All of the children’s progress data is stored on our secure servers which are housed in a secure facility and protected online behind a firewall. As the master account holder you determine how much information you want to share about your child or student and you are the only user with access to their information. Other users are unable to view your child’s progress data or information.
