The Ooka Island Adventure Explained
When players successfully complete a level in an activity on Ooka Island, they receive a sticker reward and get one item unlocked in the Mist Mart. The unlocked item is displayed in the ‘Ookariffic Popup’ at the end of the activity. Players can then purchase the unlocked item from the Mist Mart during their free play session.
Certain items within the Mist Mart are ‘locked’ when the player begins the Ooka Island Adventure, and are unable to be purchased from the Mist Mart. These items are designated with a ‘lock’ icon in the bottom right hand corner of the item. As players successfully complete activities on Ooka Island these items are unlocked and are then able to be purchased in the Mist Mart. Unlocking items on Ooka Island does not make them available in the Pencil Playground but does makes them available for purchase in the Mist Mart. When you purchase an item from the Mist Mart it will appear in the Pencil Playground, clothing and costumes will appear in the Wardrobe inside the Pencil Playground.
Free Play lasts for eight minutes and when it finishes, the Ooka Island Adventure will bring the player back into Guided Play. When players are in the Pencil Playground or the Mist Mart, they will be moved immediately into Guided play. Players who are in one of the seven learning activities or in the Popcorn Library at the end of Free Play will finish the current activity or the book that they are reading, and will then be moved into Guided Play. If Free Play continues beyond eight minutes, the player should log out of the game and log back in to continue on the Guided Play path.
The learning flow consists of 20 minutes of guided curricular play in a variety of fun phonemic and phonetic activities and then 10 minutes of reading a new e-book in the Popcorn Library. After this 30 minute period of learning, the child has accomplished a lot of hard work and as a result is rewarded with Free Play! During Free Play, the entire island opens up and children can navigate freely throughout the island to explore and discover new surprises. The Free Play feature is enabled after a child completes a full cycle of the learning flow (see PDF).
Check out our Day of Play blog post to learn more about the learning flow!
Each learning activity on Ooka Island focuses on a different skill that is essential for reading fluency and comprehension. You can learn more about the seven learning activities on Ooka Island and the skills they focus on here.
The Ooka Island Adventure has many innovative features. Check out our innovative features guide for more information.
The Ooka Compass is an in-game assessment that can be taken by any child/student with an Ooka Island Adventure account. The assessment won't bypass the activities to higher levels, as it's very important that the sequence of phonemic and phonetic activities (e.g. Cave of Sounds) are followed through so the child is strong and secure in the sound system, but does provide a way for players to skip books in the Popcorn Library to the appropriate reading level. Based on their achievement in the assessment, a player will either start higher up the book path at the Beginning level or they will start at the beginning of the book path in the Emergent level.
Find out more about the Ooka Compass in our Innovative Features section.

Logging into the The Ooka Island Adventure
There are two parts to logging into the Ooka Island Adventure. The first login screen requires the parent/instructor to enter his/her credentials. Once the account information has been successfully entered the Ooka Island Adventure opens up the child login page. Children will not need to memorize a username or password as we use picture avatars for usernames and pictures for passwords. This allows children to easily remember their login credentials, while keeping accounts secure when a parent/instructor has access to multiple student/child accounts.
To begin the login process, double click on the Ooka Island Adventure game icon to start the game. After the opening credits and the Ooka Island video, you will be taken to the parent/instructor login page, where you can enter your parent/instructor login information. Upon successful entry of this information the game will open the student/child account login screen. Now that you have logged into the Ooka Island Adventure you can hand control over to the student/child for the selection of an avatar and the choice of a picture password. Once this is done the Ooka Island Adventure will log the child into the program and play can begin.
If you are seeing: “No child accounts present, click here to add child accounts” when you log into the Ooka Island Adventure then you need to login to the Ooka Lighthouse and setup an account for your children/student’s.
The Ooka Island Adventure has a two tier account structure. There is a login for the parent/instructor account which is created when you sign up for the Ooka Island Adventure. Assigned to each parent/instructor account are child/student accounts which are set up in the Ooka Lighthouse. Log into the Ooka Lighthouse now, to setup player accounts for your child/student.
The picture password assigned to a player account can be changed at any time. To change the picture password:
- Log into the Ooka Lighthouse with your parent/instructor login information
- Click on ‘Players’ under 'Manage'
- Click on the player's name, whose password needs to be changed
- Select a new password, by clicking one of the pictures available
- Click 'Save' to save the new password
For ease of use, the game saves parent/instructor user credentials unless otherwise specified. To log into another parent/instructor account, click ‘Parent Logout’ on the left hand side of the child/student login screen. This will exit you out of the child/student login screen and bring you back to the parent/instructor login screen where you can enter a new login.
The player name for a child/student can be changed in the Ooka Lighthouse.
- Log into the Ooka Lighthouse, and click 'Players' under 'Manage'
- Click the player name that you wish to change
- Enter the new player name in the field labeled 'Desired Player Name'
- Click 'Save'

Safety
The Ooka Island Adventure is a fully contained world where children can immerse themselves safely. As a parent or educator you don’t have to worry about your child or student coming into contact with inappropriate language or content as the game is a private, secure world where players do not interact with other users they do not know. We have worked hard to make the Ooka Island Adventure a safe and secure place where your child can play.
The Ooka Island Adventure is accessed online but not through a web browser, so players are never directed outside of the game to other websites or to outside content.
All of the children’s progress data is stored on our secure servers which are housed in a secure facility and protected online behind a firewall. As the master account holder you determine how much information you want to share about your child or student and you are the only user with access to their information.
